For most first-time mums, the months before birth are a time to pause, reflect and contemplate a beckoning new life in which previous experiences of love are likely to be usurped by something as yet beyond the imagination.
For many, it's an unforgettable few months, incomparable to any other life experience, a brief passage amid a departing past and an exciting, unknown future, a transient moment in the air, to paraphrase a pop song, between the two trapezes.
For Kim Kardashian, however, it seems it's more a case of racking up as many money-making opportunities as pregnancy and new motherhood can offer. As a member of a family that has mastered the art of commercialising every aspect of human life - including marriage, divorce, and having a bigger than average backside - it's in Kim's blood to seize upon every event, regardless of personal profundity, and work out how to maximise its profitability.
She has already picked a K-daddy, rapper Kanye West. Having a name which starts with the letter K raises marketing potential, as Kim and sisters Kourtney, Khloe, Kendall and Kylie know too well. Kourtney gave birth on the family's reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, so who knows what Kim will do to make an even bigger splash, so to speak. There's already talk of a Kim/Kanye baby fashion label, and a likely £10m worth of endorsement deals.
She's quite a businesswoman, and some admire her for it, but is there any chance Kim will think differently when she's holding little baby Ker-ching in her arms? Nah, probably not.
