Talk is cheap: Hilary Swank and Susan Sarandon

By Jane Graham
Friday, 20 November 2009

It’s time to call a halt to the A-list actor interview — at least until the PRs and agents who now control every aspect of them relax and allow the odd morsel of interesting information to escape.

It’s shocking to see how easily controlled seemingly intelligent and self-sufficient superstars are — but with few exceptions (Susan Sarandon, Emma Thompson), the big names tow the line.

So this month the ‘warm, friendly, super-chatty’ Thandie Newton shockingly revealed that she is a “normal, decent” person, who “expects life to be challenging”. “Don’t be afraid of pain because it’s part of life,” she gravely imparted to her intrepid interviewer.

Meanwhile, elsewhere we discovered that Hilary Swank is dedicated to her craft but sometimes feel like an outsider. “There’s no such thing as perfection,” Swank said, before confessing she believes both in “fate” and “changing fate by making choices”. Lots of trees could be saved if fools stopped printing these meaningless platitudes. And there would be more oxygen to go round if A-list saps stopped saying them.

His may not exactly be a household name. But in unionist politics (small u — and large) Alex Kane has long been a central figure.

Why the deal isn’t the final piece of devolution jigsaw

The agreement on the devolution of policing and justice is probably the biggest con since snake oil vendors were in their pomp.

Why life in the wild isn’t really Garden of Eden

Animals, eh?.... What are they about? We can't live with the big, fierce ones, and we can't live without the little, cuddly ones.

Take a cue from amazing Grace and slap the cuffs on Tony Blair

What a joy it is in these dour times to be able to exalt the name of Grace McCann. No relation, unfortunately.

Cost of pay freezes and high taxes was a culture of duplicity, envy and hypocrisy

The Chancellor was right yesterday to dismiss the idea of a High Pay Commission. His phraseology was characteristically mild: he was "not persuaded" of his merits.
