I heard an old radio interview this week, in which a woman talked about how, having been respected for her serious image as a political animal, she was mocked for 'dumbing down' when she began writing about food. She pointed out that activities usually linked to female expertise are considered lightweight, while those connected to men are generally accepted as worthwhile.
She was a persuasive advocate for challenging this notion, and rejecting the urge to judge a pursuit differently according to the gender of its participant. She was Nigella Lawson, of course. It'll be interesting to see how the current case is reported with regard to her observation.
