Lindy McDowell: Death of an American journalist who really Dunne good
Saturday, 29 August 2009
Another major public figure passed away in America this week.
The death of Dominick Dunne at the age of 83 got nothing like the coverage of the demise of Ted Kennedy.
But the writer and journalist Dunne was an equally important figure. A man of enormous integrity his life was transformed by the murder of his daughter. Dunne felt that he and his family were denied justice.
“If you go through what I went through, losing my daughter you have strong, strong feelings of revenge,” he said in words that echo what many victims of terrorist outrages have also felt.
Dunne became a chronicler of cases involving wealthy defendants trying to elude justice.
They included famously OJ Simpson and a member of the wider Kennedy clan involved in the death of a young girl.
Dunne’s persistence and campaigning in the latter case led to a new trial.
Stylish, rich, a tremendous socialiser and a great name-dropper, Dunne was for years a star writer with Vanity Fair.
He had many advantages in life. But the death of his beloved daughter led him to fight for those he believed had been cheated of justice.
A true great.

Dominick Dunne may have been an important figure in the OJ trial, however to suggest that he was equally important as Senator Kennedy is ridiculous. Also ,it never ceases to amaze just how wrong unionist and english right wingers are in their assessment of Teddy Kennedy. Ted Kennedy was one of the leading moderates in Irish America on Northern Ireland. His position was always close to John Hume and the SDLP, yet you, the Daily "hate" Mail, RD Edwards and the likes continue to portray him as Sinn Fein's number one supporter. Absolute nonsense. Teddy spent years opposing the IRA's campaign and Sinn Fein's support of it. Noraid supporters in the US hated Ted Kennedy and were quite vocal about it. He only changed his position on Sinn Fein, when Albert Reynolds and John Hume convinced him that Adams was sincere about the peace procees and Sinn Fein participation could lead to an IRA cease-fire. Teddy Kennedy was a true friend to Ireland and its people both nationalist and unionist.

I will miss his wonderful writing, but I imagine he is overjoyed to see his beloved daughter again. Thank you for his remembrance.
