Lindy McDowell: Why did no one ever notice horror on their doorstep?

Saturday, 29 August 2009

Jaycee Lee Dugard from California was abducted at the age of 11 by a sadistic paedophile who raped her and held her captive. She bore two of his children — the first born when she was only 14.

The story has echoes of the case of Elizabeth Fritzl imprisoned in a cellar by her own father. And of Austrian Natashcha Kampusch also abducted and held in a cell by a madman.

Jaycee was kept in a wired off compound hidden from public view.

But just how do these men get away with such barbarity for so long without being rumbled by someone?

The fact that nobody seems to ask obvious questions may have a lot to do with it.

An eyewitness recalls seeing Jaycee’s abductor with a girl who he claimed was his daughter.

Describing the child who was clinging to her abuser, the eyewitness reports “It wasn't normal behaviour. She had a blank stare on her face.”

In retrospect the eyewitness felt this might have amounted to “a cry for help.”

She didn’t do anything at the time, however. She didn’t want to interfere ...

How many times, in how many similar circumstances have we heard that bleak line?

And how many more children are there out there being held captive under the noses of unquestioning neighbours who’d prefer to turn a blind eye to ‘weird’ behaviour rather than risk appearing nosy and intrusive?

This is a very sad commentary on our societies, and, I believe a vision on the the direction of evil we as a world are plummeting into.............

This is sad but typical. We are culturally encouraged to mind our own business and not interfere with strangers around us. I can recall situations where something seemed seriously weird or "off", and I've removed myself rather than investigating further. There are some things we just can't grasp, and we'd prefer to ignore them.

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Why bringing up our kids should be child's play... or maybe it's not

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
