Lindy McDowell: Will Geordie Takeaway be to US taste?

Can Ant and Dec do a Saturday Night Takeaway in America? Not for the first time, the pair are hoping to break into American TV.

The question is — does America have an appetite for a Geordie menu?

The boys are refreshingly honest in a magazine interview where they recount their first experience of an American TV studio audience. The crowd went wild clapping enthusiastically.

Afterwards when Ant and Dec remarked to a producer that that went well, he told them: “Yeah, it's amazing what you can get for 15 dollars an hour.”

The audience had been paid to clap.

Will the viewers applaud if the pair’s pitch for an American Takeaway show is successful?

The recent experience of Cheryl Cole does not augur well.

As one observer put it: “They were bowled over by Cheryl and thought she was sassy, smart, charismatic and beautiful. There was just one small problem — they couldn’t make head nor tail of her Geordie accent.”

Something there that Ant and Dec might wish to take away?
