Testing times may bear results
No less than 7,000 children sat the first part of the unofficial transfer examination which has replaced the 11-plus, scrapped by then Education Minister Caitriona Ruane (above) back in 2008. The number of pupils sitting the new unregulated test is actually a small but marked rise on the number who sat the first one back then.
Ms Ruane called the 11-plus "outdated" when she announced plans to abolish it. Obviously, very considerable numbers of parents and teachers continue to disagree.
In a couple of years the first pupils to sit the unregulated test will be headed to university. Somehow all this doesn't suggest selection has had its day. Yet still we lumber on with official denial of reality ...
