Vladimir Putin might get Alex Salmond off hook

The Crimean War gave us the Charge of the Light Brigade. The new stand-off in that region could give us the raised charges of the gas brigade. Canny old Putin controls the gas pipelines that currently supply much of the West.

Interesting follow-on, could this in turn strengthen the hand of Alex Salmond in the Scottish independence debate? Salmond has been taking a bit of a hammering of late from various quarters.

An independent Scotland might not be allowed to keep the pound, stay in the EU (a plus?) or hang on to insurance company jobs. But it does have a fair claim to the North Sea oil which, should Vladimir threaten to curtail gas supply may be more valuable than even Alex imagined.
