Stormont Executive press release - Department for Employment and Learning

Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry today visited Randox Laboratories to see the work being done in the biotechnology sector.

Employing over 1,200 people, Randox Laboratories is a global market leader within the invitro diagnostics industry, developing innovative diagnostic solutions for hospitals; clinical, research and molecular labs; food testing; forensic toxicology; veterinary labs; and life sciences. With offices and distribution in over 145 countries, the organisation is committed to revolutionising healthcare on a global scale.

In Northern Ireland this sector generates a turnover of around £1 billion and is predominantly high value added and export orientated with over 80% of sales generated from external markets.

Minister Farry was impressed by the work of Randox Laboratories and said: “The Life and Health Sciences sector, which includes biotechnology, is recognised internationally as one of the key growth sectors of the future. It is no secret that some of Northern Ireland’s most notable commercial success stories in recent years have come from this sector.

“As the core funder of university research in Northern Ireland, my Department has invested some £33million in biotechnology related research infrastructure over the past decade to support the growth of this sector in Northern Ireland and enable it to play an increasingly important role in the global health sciences arena.”
