O’Neill welcomes Plant Health and Tree Disease review
Stormont Executive press release - Department of Agriculture and Rural Development
Forestry Minister Michelle O’Neill MLA has welcomed the Review of Plant Health and Tree Disease from the Assembly’s Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) Committee.
The ARD Committee announced their Review on 12 February 2013 to review the approach and policies of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and the Forest Service on plant health and biosecurity with specific reference to tree disease.
Speaking during a debate today in the Assembly on the review, the Minister responded positively to its publication and said: “The Committee’s review is timely, and reminds us of the threats we face and the obligations on all of us to control the risks of introducing new pests and diseases that will threaten crops, trees and the native environment. This is a growing risk that we need to deal with in the context of the island of Ireland, and within a European framework.
“My Department is committed to enhancing plant health throughout Ireland by working with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine to implement the All-Island Plant Health and Pesticides strategic work programme.”
