Sports Minister congratulates the Belfast Giants
Stormont press release - Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure
Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has congratulated the Belfast Giants on winning the Elite league for the fourth time.
The Giants defeated Nottingham Panthers 3-1 on Sunday, their 11th straight victory in the league, and needed both Dundee Stars and Sheffield Steelers to lose in order to wrap up the title.
The Minister said: “I would like to congratulate Paul Adey and his team on being crowned champions once again. This is a brilliant achievement especially with 10 league games still to be played.
“The Giants have a superb following here and I am sure that the crowd will give them a fantastic welcome home on Friday evening when they return to play at the Odyssey.
“During the World Police and Fire Games last year, I was able to see for myself how popular ice hockey has become here in the north of Ireland with over 50,000 people passing through the Odyssey to watch the games.”
The Giants have also secured the Erhardt Conference title for a second successive season.
