Confiscation Order against Greenisland woman

The Social Security Agency Financial Investigation Unit obtained a Confiscation Order to the value of £9,863 against Joanne Corrigan (44) of Bates Park, Greenisland at Belfast Crown Court today.

Ms Corrigan had claimed Income Support on the grounds that she lived alone and was unfit for work. She also claimed Housing Benefit in respect of her Rates.

During her claim to benefit, the defendant had failed to declare that she had an additional income. Due to her failure to report her income, the defendant received £28,956 in benefits to which she was not entitled over a four year period.

On 8 March 2013, the defendant pleaded guilty to three charges of failing to declare her income. She was sentenced to18 month’s imprisonment suspended for three years.

At the confiscation hearing the Court granted a Confiscation Order in the amount of £9,863 with a prison sentence of six months in default if non-payment. She has until 12 May 2014 to satisfy the order.
