14 years after his untimely passing, Joey's legend still lives on
He died tragically 14 years ago, but Joey Dunlop is still held in the highest regard by many thousands of people. Readers of this newspaper have just voted him Northern Ireland's Greatest Ever Sports Star in a poll to coincide with last night's 20th Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards.
Joey is fully deserving of the accolade for his peerless ability as a motorcycle racer, but he was also a world class human being for his often unknown charity work.
Two men who one day may vie with him for his sports title, golfer Rory McIlroy and boxer Carl Frampton, shared the Sports Star of the Year award after 12 months in which they won two golf Majors and a boxing world title respectively, proving yet again that the province punches well above its weight in sport.
