A century on, we must not forget sacrifice at Somme
The slaughter of the Somme may have happened 100 years ago and seem just like ancient history to many people alive today. But the words of one brave young officer who led the charge of Irish soldiers on the first day of battle still send a shiver down the spine a century later.
Lt Frank Thornley told his children that his feet barely touched earth on his retreat back across No Man's Land - the ground was carpeted with the dead. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are going to revisit the scene to commemorate the anniversary but also to remember the courage and sacrifice of so many. We too must remember them, heroes all.
