A faux pas bordering on international proportions

Someone should take the time to tell former Donegal Mayor Frank McBrearty the meaning of the phrase 'international incident'.

It is when troops from North Korea start crossing the demilitarised zone into South Korea or when Iran lobs a missile toward Israel or – remember back – when the Russians set up a missile base in Cuba with the weapons pointing towards the US.

It is not an international incident when a PSNI Landrover driver loses his bearings in Strabane and ends up across the river – and the border – in Lifford for a few minutes.

Mr McBrearty's call for a full investigation doesn't make it an international incident; it just makes him an international laughing stock.
