All-Ireland cardiac surgery service for kids a real boon
The closure of cardiac surgery in Belfast for children with congenital heart disease appeared like a disaster for parents at the time. Many have had to travel to England for their children's operations, but the crisis has led to the development of an all-Ireland service which promises world-class results.
£42m has been earmarked for the service over the next five years, and while the surgery will take place in Dublin, that will be less of a strain on Northern Ireland parents than going to England. Those who had the vision and the commitment to see the need for cross-border co-operation on this issue will be thanked by countless parents in the future.
