It is impossible not to feel outraged when one reads our story today about the thugs who kicked a much-loved cat so badly that it later died from its injuries. Just what sort of mentality do such people have that they get enjoyment from attacking a defenceless and harmless animal?

Encouragingly, the Justice Department is signalling its intention to get tough on those who commit acts of animal cruelty. Recently it increased the maximum penalties and now is considering a central register of those convicted of animal cruelty. Anything that will punish the guilty severely and help safeguard animals is very welcome.
