Animal lover Colin's heart in right place over injured bird

It was an act of kindness that landed Colin Lowes in trouble. Having been refused help from a vet who declined to treat an injured seagull because it was a wild animal, he damaged a door while leaving the surgery.

He was in the wrong and rightly pleaded guilty in court to causing criminal damage. Yet he deserves sympathy. He didn't just walk on past when he found the injured bird, but sought treatment for it.

His heart was in the right place. Even the judge conceded that he had been acting in the best interests of the bird. In an era when so many cases of animal abuse are revealed, Colin stands as a decent human being.
