There was well-founded speculation over the weekend that the racing legend AP McCoy would be awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours list, which will be revealed later this week.

This major recognition, coming shortly after he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony in Belfast last week, would cap a truly astonishing career.

If he does indeed receive a knighthood, it is no more than he deserves for a lifetime of dedication to the sport he loves, and in which he has built a reputation and a racing record that will never be equalled.
