Aquarium's role in marine animal rescue is priceless
There is a great irony in the fact that the future of the Exploris aquarium at Portaferry is precarious when it does so much to preserve the life of so many marine animals.
Since 1989 it has rescued around 900 seals and turtles, nursing many of them back to health and returning them to the sea. Our feature today recounts some of those remarkable stories.
It is also a wonderful resource for those of us whose only experience of sea life is paddling along our shorelines. Through Exploris we can glimpse the wide variety of marine life teeming beneath our waves.
But the facility has had to be bailed out by the Executive, a gesture for which our politicians deserve credit. We should play our part by making sure it is fully utilised.
