Boxer Paddy still has a bright future ahead of him

It was heartbreak in Rio for boxer Paddy Barnes.

The Belfast man had been widely expected to be a gold medal contender in the ring after picking up bronze medals at the last two Olympics, but this time was beaten in his first bout. To go out at this early stage after four years of intensive training must be a bitter blow for the normally upbeat Paddy, but hopefully the cheeky banter will soon return.

He cited problems making the weight and perhaps he will now move up a division and also become a professional boxer. The man who was the flag-bearer for Team Ireland in Brazil has been a credit to his sport and there is no doubt that he would be a big draw.
