The death of Cilla Black at 72 will be mourned by many who recognised her as a true star who meant something to almost everyone.

She made her name as a pop star, but she also extended her career as a talented presenter of such programmes as Blind Date and Surprise, Surprise.

Cilla carried off both roles with grace and charm, and in doing so she managed to convey sincerely the impression of always being faithful to her roots in Liverpool.

She will be sadly missed by all those who admired her professionalism and her uncommon common touch.
