Clarkson deserves the sack but he's not off the road yet
Jeremy Clarkson is a major talent, but the BBC, having instigated an investigation into his involvement in a fracas with a producer on the Top Gear show, had no alternative but effectively to sack him.
It was the principled thing to do, but will come at a cost. The programme has an estimated 350 million worldwide audience and earns the BBC £50m a year.
Speculation is rife that other broadcasters will bid for his services, but he is something of a maverick having been forced to apologise for comments on a number of previous occasions.
However, this is one petrolhead who is in no danger of running out of road just yet.
