Clean up our act

Northern Ireland has the reputation as a fair and pleasant land with some of this island's most glorious scenery.

But as anyone who has driven around the province can testify, there are still plenty of litter louts who despoil the view. Today this newspaper, along with Tidy Northern Ireland and DOE Rethink Waste, launch the annual Big Spring Clean.

We are seeking to enlist an army of 50,000 volunteers to gather the litter from our streets, byways, streams, rivers and fields – a challenging target, but we know that people here have great pride in their environment and will be glad to do their bit to keep it tidy. If everyone does a little, they will make a big difference and one that we will all notice. So sign up and get cleaning.
