Commonwealth Games - You'll do us proud... and medals will be a bonus

Today Northern Ireland's athletes get down to the serious business of competing for medals at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

And if history is anything to go by, it could be a bonanza for the team. In 1986 local athletes had their biggest ever medal haul of 15 and there are genuine hopes that the current crop can emulate that team.

Our boxers are always top contenders but there are many other fine competitors across a whole range of sports and, as ever, there will be the odd surprise packet that will pull out the performance of a lifetime.

All that we can ever ask is that they put in their best efforts.

That will make them winners whether or not they pick up a medal.
