Darcy's demise stranger than fiction for book fans

There are times when fiction seems more powerful than real life and today, millions of women around the world will be mourning the demise of Mark Darcy, the hero of the highly successful Bridget Jones books.

Sadly, however, the dashing Mr Darcy has not survived in the latest book and he has been killed off, without further ado. Despite this, the cad Daniel Cleaver lives on and people are left to wonder about Mr Darcy and to ask why such bad things happen to such good people. The outpourings of grief on Twitter and Facebook are almost too much to bear but, undaunted, the redoubtable Bridget Jones lives on. Fiction, like life itself, can be so cruel ...
