Defeat at hands of Saracens as glorious as many of Ulster's victories
Tony Ward played rugby at the highest level and with considerable skill. So his analysis of the incident which saw Ulster's full back Jared Payne controversially red carded at Ravenhill on Saturday night commands respect. He wants the laws changed and feels that the referee got his decision wrong and acted too hastily.
It was a decision which may have cost Ulster the match – to play almost the entire game with only 14 men is an enormous burden – but it also showed the courage and character of the men in white. They were quite simply heroic and magnificent and to lose by such a narrow margin to a side of the calibre of Saracens was astonishing given their handicap. Ironically, Ulster probably gained more kudos in defeat than they often do in victory.
