Destruction of badger sett reinforces need for strong laws

Editor's Viewpoint

Published 09/10/2015

Residents in the Hillsborough area of Co Down quite rightly are appalled at the apparent destruction of a badger sett and the potential deaths of the animals.

This was one of the largest habitats of the protected animals in the country and police and environmental experts are investigating the residents' complaints to determine if a crime has been committed.

It is imperative that laws introduced to protect the environment and the flora and fauna of the countryside are enforced with the strictest rigour and that anyone flouting them be dealt with severely by the courts as a deterrent to others similarly inclined.
