Downside of snow

The idea of a white Christmas may be attractive to children who love snow, and to the romantics who dream about sleigh-bells, but the reality is rather different. Snow looks lovely, but it can be very messy, inconvenient and often dangerous.

This year the icy conditions have been causing havoc in many parts of the British Isles, particularly at airports, and the disruptions could not have come at a worse time. Nevertheless, hundreds of thousands of people need to travel home for Christmas, while large numbers of others have been placed under severe difficulty in setting out on their holidays.

There is no sign of the severe weather abating, so for those who do not need to travel, the best advice is to stay at home.
