The Radio 1 Big Weekend mini-festival, with its potential to attract 40,000 young people, is a huge boost for Derry's UK City of Culture programme.
It will generate excitement among a generation which wants instant gratification and who might feel there is not enough in the programme announced to date to interest them.
The trick for the organisers of the year's events is now to keep the impetus going. While there is a varied programme, many of the events fall into the category of worthy rather than exciting. Derry has a proud record of providing top class entertainment and this year gives it the chance to really make its mark, but that is not an easy task. Work still needs to be done.
