Editor's Viewpoint: A real team player

Published 12/10/2011

One of Northern Ireland football's most distinguished servants, kitman Derek McKinley, is finally handing over the reins after 30 years.

He retired last night at the age of 71, but he left with a host of good memories to counter the often disappointing results.

He was with the national side at two World Cups and saw them beat teams of the stature of West Germany, England and Spain. And he met and became friends with some of the greats of Northern Ireland football during his 228 "appearances" for the side.

He was lucky, it was a job every fan would have loved. Enjoy your retirement Derek.
