Editor's Viewpoint: A stinging rebuke

As we approach the dog days of summer there is a new danger in our gardens, the common wasp.

The colder, wetter days mean there is less food around for them and in their frantic attempts to find sustenance they become quite angry with any human unfortunate enough to cross their path.

While for most of us a wasp sting will be nothing serious, for some people it can be fatal. Two people have already died in the UK this summer from wasp stings. The best advice is to give the insects what they really want - some sweet liquids in a jar - and a wide berth.
