Editor's Viewpoint: A true golden great

Dame Mary Peters is flying high this weekend and rightly so.

To mark the 40th anniversary of her Olympic gold medal in Munich she has had an aircraft named after her, and she was the honoured guest at a star-studded gala in the Grand Opera House in Belfast.

Mary Peters has brought great honour to herself and to Northern Ireland. She has given much to society, not least through the magnificent Mary Peters Trust.

This summer has witnessed amazing achievements in the London Olympics and now the Paralympics, where our local competitors are bringing back medals.

They are all Olympians, and Dame Mary, through her public service and contribution to society remains an Olympian supreme.
