Editor's Viewpoint: A World Cup farce

The World Cup party is over for a disappointing England team which under-performed badly and which crashed out of the competition after a series of abysmal displays.

The future of manager Fabio Capello is seriously under question, but his players should also share the blame. England is not a world-class footballing nation any more, and the World Cup failure must lead to a fundamental re-appraisal in the home of football.

Despite the blatant goal scored by England that was not given by the officials, the Germans deservedly won, but irrespective of the result the case is irrefutable for the introduction of technology to help the referees and linesmen.

Otherwise goal-scoring, or non-scoring, becomes a farce.
