Editor's Viewpoint: All hail McDowell
Graeme McDowell must sometimes have felt like the forgotten star of Northern Irish golf.
Darren Clarke and the precocious Rory McIlroy have made most of the headlines in recent years, but now Graeme has eclipsed both with his stunning victory at the US Open, only the second Major ever won by someone from the province.
His was a superb exhibition of championship golf, holding his nerve while other contenders faltered. Now in the superstar league, he remains a man with a huge affection for his native Portrush and with strong family ties.
He has brought great honour to the province and certainly deserves civic recognition when he returns with the trophy.
