Editor's Viewpoint: An emotional tie

While football generates intense emotions on and off the pitch, there is little room for sentiment when big issues are at stake - including progress to the later stages of the FA Cup.

Many people may have felt that the return of the Anfield hero Kenny Dalglish as manager may have helped improve the fortunes of the ailing Liverpool club, languishing in the shadow of past glories.

However Manchester United have no sentiment for their old rivals, and they won yesterday's vital game to stay in the FA Cup. Emotion and loyalty are fine virtues but Liverpool badly need progress on the pitch as well, if they are to turn around their disastrous season - and quickly too.
