Editor's Viewpoint: An honourable act

The University of Ulster has caught the mood of the UK City of Culture by awarding an honorary degree at the Magee campus in Londonderry to the distinguished actor Sir Ian McKellen.

It was particularly appropriate that the degree parchment was handed over by another noted actor, our own James Nesbitt who is Chancellor of the University of Ulster.

Sir Ian revealed, among other things, that his great-great-grandfather was an evangelical preacher in Ballymena a long time ago, which may also help to explain his love of words and his talent for dramatic timing. Many great preachers are also actors at heart.
