Editor's Viewpoint: Beauty of cricket

One-day cricket was invented because it was thought spectators wanted more excitement.

Then 2/2 was created to make the gratification even more instant - just 4 overs and a guaranteed result. But as the thrilling climax to the South Africa versus England game proved, the traditional five-day test can provide as much excitement as any other form of the sport. England fought a dogged rearguard action to claim a draw with only one wicket still standing. It may have taken five days to reach the nail-biting conclusion, but it was worth every minute waiting for those final few overs. Cricket has a beauty all of its own.
