Editor's Viewpoint: Bell tolls for Harry

Published 23/03/2010

BBC commentator Harry Carpenter, who has died, was the voice of boxing, at least on this side of the Atlantic.

He was a great commentator at a time when boxing was |a great sport, peopled by Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier and our own Barry McGuigan. It was a measure of Carpenter’s ability that these men all held him in high esteem.

His friendship with heavyweight champion, Frank Bruno, turned into a double act with Frank’s phrase ‘know what I mean, ‘arry’ peppering every conversation. There was little Carpenter didn’t know about boxing or the other sports he covered with equal professionalism, if less acclaim.
