Editor's Viewpoint: Boxing clever

Boxing history is littered with stories of brave men who fought too long and suffered severe health and mental problems as a result. It is the most unforgiving of sports and John Duddy, the Londonderry star who was ranked highly in the world, is to be applauded for calling time on his career.

He says he is no longer prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to perform at the level demanded by professional boxing. His hunger has gone and while he could still have made good money by taking on another fight, he is right to leave now. His decision proves that his senses have certainly not been muddled by the fight game.
