It may be only a small change, but the experiment of breaching a peace wall in north Belfast has proved a resounding success three months on. There have been no reports of any trouble since a gate was opened in the barricade to allow access to all parts of Alexandra Park.
The peace walls keeping communities apart throughout the city are a blight even if they were once necessary. However they give some people a sense of security and any demolition of the walls probably will have to be gradual. Alexandra Park has shown that differing communities can share common ground and building on that example should be a New Year resolution for everyone in the city.
