Editor's Viewpoint: Community spirit

Meanwhile, if our politicians really wanted to see how to improve community relations more of them should have attended the cross-community carol service attended by people from two flashpoints in east Belfast.

Just hours after serious rioting in the area residents from the Short Strand and the Castlereagh Road areas joined forces in a show of seasonal goodwill.

These people showed the true spirit of the Ulster character, people being prepared to get on together while respecting their differences. They were not sacrificing anything, but merely showing that they could occupy common ground. They were showing that in spite of the troubled backdrop of recent times, it is possible to live in harmony.
