Editor's Viewpoint: Don't be a tweet

James McClean was partly the author of his own misfortune with his remarks on Twitter which provoked a totally irresponsible reaction from some so-called fans who objected to him opting to play for the Republic.

As Martin McGuinness says young footballers should be allowed to play for whatever team they like.

McClean is right to close his account. He may like the cut and thrust of engaging with fans, but football is a passionate sport and events can spiral out of control quickly as it did in this case with death threats issued. The police must investigate and bring the perpetrators to court. Meanwhile he should let his football do the talking.
