Editor's Viewpoint: Down ... but not out

As the Irish rugby team heads off to New Zealand for the World Cup, there are many who are already writing off their chances. Admittedly the results of the warm-up games were disappointing, but maybe the canny Irish were just lulling their opponents into a false sense of security.

Whatever the case, Irish teams at any sport are at their most dangerous when the odds seem stacked against them.

If that tradition is borne out in the coming weeks - and the competition lasts an astonishing six weeks - then the Irish team could be in for a long stay Down Under. We certainly hope so.
