Editor's Viewpoint: Element of surprise

The much-hyped England football team also faces a day of reckoning this week. After an abysmal performance against USA, and another poor draw against Algeria, the affluent English elite must win their next game to stay in the competition.

At this stage, few would hold out hope for them, but the attraction of this World Cup is the way in which the supposedly major teams have been underperforming.

Not only England, but also France, Italy, and Spain have been disappointing, but the resilience of "minnows" like New Zealand has been mightily impressive. Thankfully, major sport continues to fascinate all of us with its "own goals" and major surprises.
