Editor's Viewpoint: Elton John and the baby blues
News that Elton John (63) and his partner David Furnish (48) have become parents after a son was born to a surrogate mother raises a host of moral and practical issues.
While surrogacy is no longer regarded as a rare way of circumventing nature to become a parent, there always remains the question if the miracle of life has just become a commodity available to the wealthy.
In this case there is the question of the age of the two men. There is no doubt that they can provide a child with all its material needs, but parenthood in advancing years is an onerous task.
Society should not simply accept that just because something - in this instance the creation of a baby - is possible, it is always right or desirable.
