Editor's Viewpoint: Graeme McDowell and AP McCoy are making history

Two of Northern Ireland’s sporting heroes, golfer Graeme McDowell and jockey Tony McCoy, are favourites to lift another trophy, the Sports Personality of the Year award.

Both would richly deserve the accolade — McDowell for winning the US Open and clinching victory for Europe in the Ryder Cup, and McCoy for being the greatest jump jockey of all time who finally won the Grand National this year.

But history is not on their side as both sports have a poor record in the contest and Barry McGuigan is the only person from this island to lift the award. However, both men have made their own history already and can do so again.
