Editor's Viewpoint: Homegrown heroes

When Europe needed a sporting hero of unquenchable courage to step forward to secure victory in the Ryder Cup, the team found the perfect man in Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell.

Following his doughty win in the US Open earlier this year, we all knew he had the talent and the nerve to get that vital last point.

And our other team member, Rory McIlroy, also more than played his part during the four days of his first Ryder Cup in spite of his tender years. The province should be proud of their contribution to a nerve-jangling sporting spectacle.
