Editor's Viewpoint: Kicking off new era

Published 11/10/2011

Nigel Worthington has been a fine servant of Northern Ireland football, both as a player during 66 international appearances and as a manager.

He is an honourable man and did the right thing by offering to resign as manager after tonight's last European Championship qualifying game.

Being an international manager is an unforgiving task, judged solely on results. Nigel's teams have won only two of their last 23 and, even given the paucity of talent at his disposal, that is a very poor return. It is time for a change and perhaps the next manager can instill a bit more of the fighting spirit required to make Northern Ireland at least contenders when it comes to qualifying for major championships.
