Editor's Viewpoint: Look on bright side

Seldom can a new year have dawned with such pervasive gloom abounding but this newspaper is determined to offer its readers some grounds for optimism.

As our story today shows, there are several things that can be done to change the mood, from getting a new job to finding a new hobby or simply spending more time with friends and family.

The January blues are common - and this year even the weather seems to be conspiring to dampen spirits - but it's also a time to fight back and look on the bright side of life. The old adage of accepting the things we cannot change and changing the things we can still holds true and can really make a difference.
